Composers in Residence

Joseph Phibbs

To celebrate the Briiten Centenary, we appointed Joseph Phibbs as Composer in Residence for our 2012/13 season. We commissioned a new composition Choral Songs of Homage from Joseph for our concert on 25 May 2013 - with a second performance coming up at our Britten Centenary Concert in November 2013. 

Joseph has strong connections with Suffolk, having works premiered at Aldeburgh and Snape Maltings, promoting Benjamin Britten's music and being a director of the Britten estate.

Joanna Lee

To mark our 60th anniversary, we appointed Joanna Lee as Composer in Residence for our 2011/12 season. She composed Merman for us - a 10 minute 3 Act opera using text by Hannah Silva, based on the tale of the Merman of Orford. We performed this in Orford church in March 2012 - with a second performance coming up in November 2013.

Joanna Lee is a young established composer and tutor at The Perse School in Cambridge. She studied at Birmingham Conservatoire under Richard Causton and Edwin Roxburgh. She has undertaken a number of courses at Snape, including the Jerwood Opera Writing Programme. She was one of the six young composers featuring in the 2010 Aldeburgh Festival.For more information on Joanna, visit her website.
